1) Redcell – The Silicon Garden 

Redcell is an alter ego of Michael Golding and Steven Rutter aka B12. These guys are true IDM and UK techno pioneers. The Silicon Garden just glides away so beautifully – the strings, the glitches and that funky breakbeat: amazing!

 

2)  Convextion – Matrix A1

Recently some Convextion records got a repress and just last year he came with a fantastic new album on a.r.t.less, a sub label of Don Williams’ Mojuba Records. This probably is my favourite Convextion track – it’s not that easy to pick a favourite because he has made some amazing music. Rumour has it he’s willing to do a repress of this EP from 1995 (the B-side Miranda already got one in 2007), so if there’s any label head listening out there: go for it!

 

3) Parallel 9 – Ventris

It’s not a big secret I’m a huge Steve Rachmad fan. I had the privilege to warm up for him at Decadance a couple of years ago, and he’s such a warm, genuine guy. I just had to include one of his tracks! Ventris came out in 2005 on Ghent’s finest Music Man Records. I still miss that record shop too – good times!

 

4) Quadrant – Infinition

The Berlin-Detroit connection. This was released in 1993 on Carl Craig’s Planet E Recordings, but still sounds so fresh today! The list of alter egos these two fine gentlemen released records under goes on and on: Basic Channel, Rhythm & Sound, Maurizio, … Must do: go trough their whole back catalogue and discover how many of your favourite club tracks these guys have made.

 

5 ) Osunlade vs. Phil Collins – In The Air Tonight (Yoruba Soul Vox )

I still remember driving home one late summer morning and this was playing in the car. The sun was just coming up and I just spent a great night in a club – still buzzing. The roads were desolate and because of the special lighting this just fitted the ambience. Oh and because Phil Collins is great, that too!

Part of the previously unreleased soundtrack to fictitious writer/director Joel              Hughes controversial 80s teen drama Wild in Blue.

Everything about Giallo Disco is great.

3. Zoot Woman – Grey Day (2003) 

    

   I don’t have many musical memories from driving back home after a typical Ghent night out. But this one made it to memory lane (well actually also DJ Deeon – Da Dik Suk, but let’s forget about that. The little bastard took me by surprise.).

4. Stelee Up – Waiting for you (1984)

To be a good DJ you must develop the hunger’, Brewster and Broughton write in their book. Thang agrees. The hunger to smell new  well beforehand, the hunger that brings water to your mouth when discovering a lost collection of dusty vinyl, the hunger to dig into the past and revive old jams. Teasing and crowd pleasing are not a question of ‘or’, but of ‘when’. Obscure disco dubs next to high energy r&b next to slow motion techno next to Blondie next to a vintage rave classic, next to the next, rising on the horizon club banger? I was driving around Gent with a huge hangover. I switched on the radio, and Lefto’s radio show was playing. Always quality!  There is no drop en no beat at all! 🙂

It was also the last closing song for the first edition to  1988 in Kompass with Len Faki.

    2. Quiet Village – Pillow Talk

What i really like about this blog that you can just submit mellow songs, you are not asking for the next 10 techno bangers. Those songs are usually the one’s that you can never play at a gig, but they still express who you are!

Matthew from Radioslave has also started up this side project Quiet Village that is more easygoing and calm.

   3. Ultravox – Monument

Its more a poppy sound but you can go everywhere with this kind of track!

  4. Patrick Cowley – Mockingbird Dream

Pre-wave but its still spacy as fuck

He did just to much for the pop music, but left us too soon. He is often credited as a pioneer of electronic dance music. In 1971, at the age of 21, Cowley moved to San Francisco to attend the City College of San Francisco where he studied music, specifically the use of synthesizers.

I saw him once in Brussels. A really charming and warm person from Canada. He knows english and french so he had like the whole crowd in the club going bananza!

I saw Hopkins for the 1^st Time as support act for Herbert & I instantly heard a genius of this era & by now he has all the credits he deserves , splendid club tune & probably one of the best tunes to end a set .

Started playing 50’s – 80’s jazz, rhythm & blues, funk, soul and disco for several years, however growing up during the rise of the Belgian electronic music scene, beats have always been deeply rooted. I’m co-organizing the Tuupe-events and just started my own project by the name of Ojoo Music. Digging deep, long sets and playing vinyl are essential in my approach to DJing. You can not fit me into one category, I’m a bit of an all-rounder fully in love with the dust and grooves of that good old black plastic magic called vinyl.

Old but gold, music that transcends time and genre.

             2. Claro Intelecto – Peace of Mind

 

2003 Electro classic, truly a masterpiece. You don’t talk whilst this one is on the platter, you just listen and experience.

Genius producer! Dreamy, mysterious and has a Twin Peaks feel to it.

               4. Moreira – The Truth

Love the label, the artists and their commitment: “vinyl as weapon of mass dissemination of their musical works.” Played this one several times to close a set and always gets the crowd going.

               5. Convextion – Saline Moon

Such an excellent produced track, funky yet dreamy with that perfect playful percussion. I could listen and dance to this for a lifetime. Actually the whole album is to die for.

1)  51 Days – Paper Moon 

Legendary label from the early nineties. All releases (mostly from Dobre, Zki & Jamez) were really good & still sound very fresh 23 years after release.

2) Spike – Kanti Datum (Abel rmx)

Just buy the full album “Orange Cloud Nine” where the original is included. All winners on it. This is a more “dance friendly” edit from Red Light Radio’s Abel.

3) A Vision Of Panorama – Cacades

Solid & melodic track with the typical AVOP sound in it. I’ve played this one a lot in the Texture Radio shows & when I’m doing the warming-up or closing down I mostly have it with me. 

4) Midnight Zone – Danger Zone

This was re-released on the PPU label a few years ago. All time classics & a perfect one for early mornings.

5) Pino Daniele – Yes I Know My Way

Good memories on this track but haven’t played it out much. Always hesitating if it’s the perfect moment or not and then I forget to play it … 😉

Sublime track that always works at the end of a night. Fuzzy beats combined with subtle synths, we love it!

2) JEROME SYDENHAM & DENNIS FERRER – TIMBUKTU (PAN AFRICAN ELECTRO DUB)

We’ve used this one a million times to finish a set. Works every time. All time classic.  

3)  WESTBAM & NENA – OLDSCHOOL BABY (PIANO MIX )

Another cracking classic. Produced in 2002 by Westbam, an electronic music legend from Berlin. A catchy piano tune & a crafty vocal. Simple but very effetive.

4)  WHO MADE WHO – KEEP ME IN MY PLANE (DJ Koze’s Hudson river dub)

Sweet & mellow track, made by one of our favorite producers. Play it during a sunrise and you will see a lot of smiling faces.  

5) CLOSER MUSIK – MARIA

A true tear-jerker. A wake up call for the dancing crowd in the early morning. The melancholy makes them realize that the night is nearly over.
